UPDATED: SVV August 2012 Events

August has a few opportunities for you to come on out and see what we’re about. Here’s the list of events we’ve got going on this month.

SVV continues to ride the wave of summer blockbuster movies. Earlier this summer, we saw ”Battleship,” “Prometheus,” ”The Amazing Spider-Man,” and “The Dark Knight Rises.” Most recently, we went to see “Total Recall.” We strive to provide opportunities to get together, see some great films, and enjoy the camaraderie of being with fellow Veterans, Servicemembers, and Supporters. We’ve been known to deconstruct tactics and procedures for military movies.

This month we got one such get-together with “The Bourne Legacy.”

We’ll be gathering to see the early afternoon showings “The Bourne Legacy” on Sunday, August 19th. You can find more information at our Events page. Usually, we gather in front of the theatre and grab our tickets before heading in. Should you feel so inclined, get some refreshments and we’ll find a theatre aisle to commandeer and set up camp. Afterward, we head to a local chow hall to eat, talk, and just have a great time.

So if you’re looking for an opportunity to meet and greet other LGBT Veterans and Servicemembers, join us for an afternoon of fun, film, and camaraderie.

On Monday, August 20th, we get down to business at our monthly general meeting at the Lavender Library, 1414 21st Street, in midtown. This month we’ll be discussing upcoming events like the Rainbow Festival and what’s coming for Veterans Day in addition to news regarding Veterans. Our board takes the opportunity to bring as much news and information as possible to our members. The meeting goes down at 6:30 p.m. and runs til 8 p.m. We’ll also be discussing SVV’s upcoming involvement in a Veteran appreciation picnic where you can volunteer.

UPDATE The office of Assemblymember Dr. Richard Pan will be holding a press conference on Wednesday, August 15th at the Sacramento Gay & Lesbian Center to answer questions on AB 1505 which SVV is co-sponsoring with Equality California (EQCA) and supported by Swords To Plowshares. The press conference will happen at 5 p.m. at the Center to be followed by a screening of the 1978 film, “Sergeant Matlovich vs. the U.S. Air Force.” Find more information out our Community Events page. This event has been cancelled and will be rescheduled to a later date. We’ll keep you posted.

SVV will be attending and representing at the 3rd Annual Veterans Appreciation Picnic in Citrus Heights on Saturday, August 25th. This is a great opportunity to get involved, get information from community resources, and grab some free chow. The great folks from the  Citrus Heights Womens Club and American Legion Post 637 found us and invited us to come out for the day. The event is going to be at  Rusch Park and will go from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. We’re looking a few good Vets, Servicemembers, and Supporters to help man the booth. If you’re interested, send us a message at info@sacvalleyvets.com and we’ll get back to you. This is sure to be an awesome and fun event; it’s free by the way.

So, as you can see, we’ve got a few things going on this month. We’re always looking forward to meeting new faces and seeing our regular event attendees. If you’re new, we’ll make you feel welcome.

We look forward to see you at any of the events we’ve got going on in the month of August!
